You don’t need fancy ingredients or tools to practice Magic. It all depends on your imagination and will. You can cast spells with sounds, sensations, colors, objects, or concepts. You can even empower your words in conversation. (Just be careful about empowering negative thoughts.) Here are some tips to help you get started.
Make a List
In Magic, there are plenty of ways to acquire spells. You can get them from your professor, other trainers (especially the Secret ones), Hoard Packs and creatures, and even quests.
While some of them are great, others could be better. Deadly Rollick, for example, doesn’t protect your life total or board, and it costs four mana to hard cast. In contrast, efficient exile effects like Eat to Extinction and Vraska’sVraska’s Contempt often gives you a mana-positive exchange. So you need to make a list of which ones to learn.
Create a Spell
Many occultists use crystals, herbs, and other natural objects to create and charge their spells. However, a simple cooking pot or even an heirloom can become a powerful enchantment if you treat it with reverence.
Clean the physical space where you’ll work and purify your spell spiritually by burning incense, sprinkling salt water, or playing clear notes on a musical instrument. Some rituals require repetition to focus on intention and fortify the magical connection. Timing is also essential, with the moon phase, time of day, and other astrological factors influencing results. For more details on free spells, check out ExtremeSpells online.
Create a Ritual
During a long, drawn-out breakup, my best friend took up a mantra that she repeated daily. She didn’t think of it as spellcraft, but the repetition helped her feel more resilient and connected to her sense of self.
Rituals often require specific materials, like candles, herbs and spices, crystals, traditional altar tools, and colored altar cloths. These can be helpful when choosing correspondences and when preparing the ritual.
Cast the Spell
The most crucial step in casting a spell is believing it will work. With faith and concentration, a spell will be effective.
Clean and purify the space you’ll be working in, visualizing negative energy dispersing as you do so. Light candles, play music or use other appropriate ritual elements.
Some spells, like Elvish Spirit Guide and Simian Spirit Guide, are accessible because they cost nothing to cast (although shenanigans like Glyph of Warding can help). Others, like Mogg Salvage and Leyline of the Infinite, require a specific permanent to be on the battlefield.
Relieve the Negative Energy
Negative energy is toxic to your physical and mental health. It can make you feel heavy, gloomy, and dark. It can also make your mind filter the outside world via wrath, fear, and paranoia.
One way to relieve negative energy is to call upon benevolent entities such as spirit guides or guardian angels. Another way is to exercise. Vigorously moving your body helps scrub negativity from your system on several levels, like washing a dirty cloth in a stream of pure water. Lastly, some people find relief in rearranging their home environment.
Clear the Area
Many people believe in the practice of energetic cleansing. This is where you remove harmful energy from an object, space, or person.
A spell’s area of effect extends in straight lines from its point of origin. The spell doesn’t affect that location if an obstruction blocks one of these straight lines.
Some free spells are reactive, such as Force of Vigor and Force of Negation. Others are proactive, such as Raising the Toughness. Still, others cost less depending on the state of the board or other actions.
Keep a Journal
Keeping a journal is essential to your magical practice, whether you are a solitary hedgewitch or a communal kitchen witch. A journal can record the steps of a spell, the influences it was cast under, and its results.
It is also a great way to track correspondences. Be sure to designate a page in your book for this purpose. You may use a notebook, but any journal or notebook will work. Also, keep a section for notes on your spiritual or magical experiences.
Keep a Spell Book
A spell book is a place to store wizard spells. It can be used to memorize spells that are too long to fit in a wand, or it can be used to preserve magical knowledge in case the mage dies.
It can be purchased or found in the dungeon. Spellbooks can be a variety of sizes and styles, from a functional leather tome to a finely bound gilt-edged tome found in an ancient library. The chance of a spellbook being cursed when read is 1 in 3. Failing to read a spellbook produces the message “spellbook crumbles to dust!”.
Keep a Magical Journal
Keeping a magical journal is an essential discipline for any witch. It provides a record of rituals and workings performed, allows one to track the development of their Magic over time, and helps them become more attuned to their personal growth.
There are many ways to keep a journal, from using loose-leaf paper added to a 3-ring binder to making handmade journals with handwritten and embellished pages. It is crucial to be honest with yourself in what you write and how you conduct your journaling, regardless of your approach.
Keep a Magical Journal
Keeping a magical journal or Book of Shadows is integral to developing a relationship with one’s Magic. It allows witches to record their thoughts and experiences, reflect on how their goals and beliefs have changed, and track the results of spell construction and working.
If you prefer a more hands-on approach to creating a journal, try making your book out of loose-leaf paper and adding subject dividers for ease of use. You can add a touch of homemade flair with calligraphy pens and watercolor illustrations.
