Create Catchy Newsletters

Blue circle with a yellow and red newsletter

It can be really hard to create catchy newsletters, I know I have had a lot of struggles when creating one. So I thought I would give you some tips and tricks to create a catchy newsletter all on your own!

I thought I would run through some information about getting your newsletter right and giving your readers something to read about.

Now it’s all about those catchy headlines, right? Of course! But be careful with your subjects as using click bait wrongly can land you in some hot water, or even have your readers not want to have anything to do with your company.

So it’s good to be mindful and use colours that are complementary to your business/website but also stay away from colours that are not positive, or eye catching. Like dark browns, this colour doesn’t seem to go down very well.

Get the headline/subject right!

The first thing someone sees in their inbox is the headline/subject for the email.

This is super important and you need to make sure you are using subjects that are catching your readers eye, otherwise it won’t be opened and will end up in the bin.

Once opened, you want you reader to look and think ‘Okay, I need to read this’. So this is where we get into creating the catchy newsletters and I found that script fonts work for me.

Think about your target audience and what you want to do to catch their attention.

For example, if you are writing about flowers, why not use some floral emoji’s to catch the readers attention? Or if you are offering a sale, use some sale based emoji’s like £ or even stars to catch their attention.

Write something that caches their attention, but don’t use click bait that doesn’t resonate with the rest of the newsletter. I’ve seen many click bait emails and wasted my time reading it, this can make people want to spam you. Or even not use your company.

Get the look to create catchy newsletters

The most important part apart from the headlines/subjects, is how your newsletter looks.

If you don’t have a newsletter looking eye-catching, you may find that people open, have a quick scan and close down the email.

I’ve found that people really enjoy a good strong headline, an eye catching font and this is where fonts are very important!

Font bundles is a place I visit to grab some free fonts to use in my newsletters as well as my websites too. As I like the alternative themes, I do go to sites such as Font Bundles to locate myself some good quality fonts that I can use throughout and keep my theme going.

You want a fresh look and a font does the job for catching the eye, so you want to make sure that Font Bundles is a place you visit!

Apps/Websites to help create newsletters

There are many apps and websites out there where you can create your newsletters. If you have limited knowledge of the Microsoft apps for example, then using a website or app line Canva can really help you create your beautiful newsletters.

Use colours that fit within your aesthetic, but also eye catching colours work. Think of your target audience and use colours, emojis and bright pictures!

Entice with pictures

Use pictures that draw attention to what you want to get across. If you are selling products, make sure they are bright and catchy, you want your readers to be attracted to the photographs.

I would recommend to use paid stock images if you are not using your own images as you can end up in a bit of hot water and a large bill for the use of the picture. Although there are free sites, it has been known to avoid these sites and look for sites where you pay for the use of the picture. This way you can be sure you are not going to end up in hot water as you paid for the picture outright.

Bright, white backgrounds are mostly popular, with the item being shown for sale or with a catchy headline!

Be creative with your pictures. Use your banners also at the top and ensure you leave your website and contact details. This is missed quite frequently!

List items for sale, or link to posts of the week so people can see what you have been upto since the last newsletter.

Things to think about

You need to create a regular newsletter and keep the newsletter coming out as you decide upon.

If you choose weekly, keep the newsletters weekly on a set date. This gets your readers used to your next newsletter coming out.

Start off monthly, just whilst you get into it then you can keep up a regular schedule. Then you can make more and more as you go along.

Keep a similar lay out for each newsletter just so it becomes familiar to your readers. I have seen a newsletter before and thought ‘Who is this?’ as I did not recognise anything although it was something I had read often.

Try not to send them out too much, when you have sales or an important notice. Try to keep it once or twice a week maximum as it can be too much for your readers.

Keep it bright, keep it light and have something fun in there! Comedy is always fun, but choose wisely as you don’t want to offend people.

Remember to keep your details clear on the email so people can check your site or contact you if needed.

Have some fun making your newsletters!
