If you’re a parent, you likely understand the sobering responsibility that’s ahead of you. Children can be a lot of fun and they can bring joy to your life, but they do mean completely changing how your life looks. Your child becomes the priority, it’s as simple as that.
One of the ways you can be a good parent is by making sure your child always feels loved and secure at home. Unfortunately, this isn’t as simple as telling them they’re loved, although this is an important part of parenting. You have to demonstrate it.
Understanding Love Languages
Speaking of telling your child that they’re loved, why not discuss love languages? Different people have different ways of expressing love and, in turn, different ways of feeling loved. When you get to know someone, you learn their love languages.
The five basic love languages are words of affirmation (saying you love them), quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and gifts.
It’s important to cover all of these love languages with your children, and pay attention to what impacts them the most.
Great Gifts for Children
Speaking of love languages, some people think that giving gifts to children is trying to “buy their love”. But gift giving is only an issue if it’s the only way you display love.
A well-thought out gift on a special occasion, or even on an ordinary day that you want to make special, can make a child feel as though you’re thinking of them. Whether it’s a video game, a book, a toy, or something pretty like a rag doll chain, think about what your child would like.
Quality Time
Another love language is quality time. Quality time doesn’t mean just hanging out with your kids on special occasions or taking them on exciting trips, although those are great ways to bond with your children. It also means quantity time, or spending a lot of time together in your downtime.
Do chores together, go on walks together, try to learn their hobbies and teach them your interests. Develop a normal routine where you talk to each other in a relaxed environment. If the only time you really talk to your child is to lecture them on something, they aren’t going to feel as though they can approach you when they’re in trouble.
It’s been said that parents should be parents, not friends. But you can be an authority figure that your child can feel comfortable with. There’s a balance.
Boundaries and Protection
However, it is important to set boundaries as a parent. This isn’t just to be controlling, but it’s also to protect your children and help them to feel safe. For example, rather than letting your child do whatever they want online, teach them how to be safe on the internet.
Different families have different boundaries and rules, but these rules are important for your child. Get them involved in chores and ensure they understand right from wrong, even if it’s hard sometimes.
