Creating a blog is cathartic, a place where you can share your thoughts, feelings or get something out there like reviews of something you really enjoyed or despised. So I thought I would set out some tips for creating an alternative blog that will come in handy for creating your place on the internet.
Having a blog that will really stand out is important these days, with the internet being filled with millions upon millions of blogs you want something that is appealing to your audience but captivating at the same time. Secondly, you need a good, working laptop or computer. Thirdly, cameras are important, or access to images to make your pages really stand out.

The most important part is looking for a place to put your words into action. Most popular platforms are free such as Blogger or WordPress. Some even stick to platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, or use them to share their posts. However, there are also other places where you have more control and ownership, such as going self-hosted and using a platform such as WordPress.
I’ve been self-hosted for about 5 years now and I enjoy the freedoms I have. I get to choose how it looks without restrictions and I am free to write whatever I like.
You can get hosting very cheap, but personally, I would look to pay a little more so you have some security and look for smaller companies that offer support as well as hosting.
Free platforms like Blogger and WordPress.com are a great way to get your foot in the door. One thing I would suggest is to buy your very own domain name and this will help you in the long run.

It’s all in the name
Of course, once you have decided where you are going, you need a name. A name that suits what you are doing!
It can be your name, something you admire or something you simply make up.
Come up with a few ideas though as you need to ensure that you are able to buy the domain and capture the social media for your new brand.
Finally, think of how you want your domain to look. You have the obvious .com and .co.uk, but also consider a .co domain as well.
Remember, this is your brand so has to be something that is attached to you so make it you! Make yourself stand out as something wonderful.
Choose your aesthetic
You want to make sure your blog looks the part so making sure it suits your aesthetic is important.
Choosing a font is imperative to give the base of your website an authentic and true to you look. Places like Fontsy have wonderful alternative styled fonts where you can choose one to suit your needs.
There is also a WordPress font plugin if you choose to use the WordPress platform, either free or self hosted.
Pictures say a thousand words also, but make sure you are either using your own photographs or you are sourcing them from avenues where you have a licence.
Don’t be fooled by the ‘free’ picture websites as generally they don’t have licencing for these pictures and can land you in some hot water. I really wanted to include this important note in my tips for creating an alternative blog post.
Choose your audience
Finding the right audience is imperative, make sure your content reaches out to them and make sure you are sharing in the relevant places that attract your audience.
Write posts that capture they attention and want them to read more of your content. For example, if you are writing about Goth fashion, find new and upcoming brands that your audience will ant to see, but use the right keywords to rank better in Google. ‘Goth clothing’ for example isn’t enough, try to stick a brand in there and something like review. Long-tail keywords are the way forward. Like ‘tips for creating an alternative blog’ is a good idea for a long-tail keyword.
You can open your audience wider and attract other types. So if you were into tarot, then write about tarot too. There is no need to stick to just one niche, get finding things that you enjoy and others will.
Write from the heart and be you
The most important thing I have ever learned is to be myself and enjoy what I write.
I have a number of blogs and one ended up changing into something I wasn’t happy with. So over time, I stopped caring about it and it became a job more than something I love. When I created this one, it was about things I really enjoy. This became a very important life lesson in writing hat I love and not turning it into something else.
Be at one with your writing, write how you want, not how others want you to write.
