What Does It Really Mean To Date Yourself?

Date Yourself

It’s a term that you may very well have heard before, be it as a recommendation or otherwise. Although we and the media around us can get our minds very focused on the question of dating, we sometimes do so at the expense of the person we should be trying to care for the most: ourselves. Here, we’re going to look more closely at the concept of “dating yourself” and a few ways that you can do it.

What it means to date yourself

To date yourself is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It means actively taking time and setting it aside to take yourself on dates instead of other people. Putting energy, time, and even some money towards offering yourself a good time can help you experience more of the kind of evenings you love. What’s more, dating yourself has many benefits, including increasing your self-confidence, allowing you to better understand your own likes, dislikes, goals, and more, and it can even improve your relationship with others. A lot more people need to date themselves before they’re ready to date other people.

Give yourself a break

If you asked most people what they wish they had more of, “time” would be one of the most frequent answers. Even when we’re not busy as can be, we’re often trained to make sure that we’re engaging with something external at all times. Sometimes, you need to unplug, to turn off, and just be with yourself. Finding your inner calm with an hour of meditation, or even simple nothingness can be just what you need to keep yourself on an even keel.

Pamper yourself

The concept of dating yourself isn’t just about spending time on yourself, however. It’s about putting in the energy and investment that you would normally put into the person you are dating, but turning it inward. For instance, rather than getting ready for a hot date out with someone you fancy, it might involve allowing yourself a luxurious spa holiday break to take care of yourself, instead. A little indulgence, even if it’s only momentary, can have a long-lasting effect on your self-esteem, your feelings of beauty, and can help you get those stress levels way down.

Go it solo

A lot of people fear the idea of going to the cinema or to the restaurant alone. However, that’s mostly because it has connotations of being stood up. If you remove the pressure of expecting a date, then you will find that you can actually have a fantastic time out by yourself. It allows you to indulge in what you love, be it gourmet restaurant cooking or the latest releases, without any societal pressures acting on you. You’re there for the experience, for yourself, and everything else is tertiary.

To effectively date yourself, you need to put in the energy that you would into dating someone else, but make sure it’s all directed on giving yourself the best time possible. For your emotional health, it can be a huge win.
